Microwave Drying of Wood Strands
نویسندگان
چکیده
Characteristics of microwave drying of wood strands with different initial moisture contents and geometries were investigated using a commercial 10 small microwave oven under different power inputs. Temperature and moisture changes along with the drying efficiency were examined at different drying scenar ios. Extractives were analyzed using gas chromatography=mass spectrometry (GC=MS). The results showed that the microwave drying process consisted of three distinct periods (warm-up period, evaporation period, and heating-up per15 iod) during which the temperature, moisture change, and drying efficiency could vary. Most of the extractives were remnant during microwave drying. It was observed that with proper selections of power input, weight of drying material, and drying time, microwave drying could increase the drying rate, save up to 50% of energy consumption, and decrease volatile organic compound (VOC) 20 emissions when compared with the conventional drying method.

Microwave Preconditioning to Accelerate Solar Drying of Timber
Wood drying is essential for preparation of this natural resource for practical applications. Solar drying can reduce drying costs and energy consumption. There are many potential models to describe the drying process. However, most models confirm that the tortuosity of the moisture transport path is an important control parameter during the diffusion-controlled drying process. Microwave heatin...
متن کاملThe simulation ofmicrowave heating of wood using a rectangular wave guide: Influence of frequency and sample size
Microwave heating–drying of wood using a wave guide is a relatively new area of research. In order to gain insight into the phenomena that occur within the wave guide together with the temperature distribution in the wood, a detailed knowledge of absorbed power distribution is necessary. In this paper, a two dimensional numerical model is developed to predicted the distribution of electromagnet...

The cost of drying carpet which is done toward the end of the manufacturing process, is quite high. The carpet industry has been using convection drying for many years. Little attention has been given to quantifying the effect of microwave power during the drying of carpet. An experimental system was developed whereby air was introduced into the cavity of a domestic microwave oven. The resu...

ABSTRACT: The combination of pulsed vacuum osmotic dehydration and microwave drying of garlic bulbs were examined. The response surface methodology (RSM) was used to determine the effect of NaCl concentration (8%-20%), osmotic solution temperature (25-65°C), operation pressure (240-830 mbar), immersion time (20-300 min) and microwave power level (100-600 W) on water loss (WL), solids gain (SG),...

In this paper, water content from celery, corn, and sour cherry were removed through tunnel, fluidized bed, and fluidized bed with microwave dryers. One day before performing the experiments, the fruits were put into a refrigerator and were ground into slices with average dimensions of 5×8×8 mm. For each experiment, 40 g of the samples were inserted in dryers. Moisture content in the samples wa...
